Evagrius Ponticus and His Accounts of Demons

Reading the ancient ascetical writer, Evagrius Ponticus, is a rather wild experience.

An immensely influential figure within Christian monasticism, especially in the East, Evagrius wrote works on theology, the monastic life, and other spiritual writings.  In the pages of his works on prayer and the ascetical life, one is immediately presented with a world populated by the continual assaults of demons that makes the writing seem more like a work of fantastical fiction than anything.

And yet, the writings breathe with a kind of authenticity in the frightening battles between monks and demons that they speak of.  Though the modern mind is probably more than tempted to simply pass these words of Evagrius and other Desert Fathers as metaphorical, mythological, or whatever else, it is actually quite interesting to read these writings simply as they are.

Evagrius does not speak of demons as simply sinful temptations or thoughts, but as literal spiritual beings engaged in all-out warfare against the Christian.  If this was true in his time, it seems that this kind of thing has really subsided - evil seems to have found other avenues to go about causing the ruin of man.

Nonetheless, here's a sampling of what Evagrius describes in his work On Prayer:

"We have heard that the evil one attacked a certain saint so fiercely as he prayed that, when the saint lifted up his hands, the evil one changed himself into a lion and raising his front legs fixed his claws into the saint's thighs; and he kept them there until the saint lowered his hands, which was only when he had come to the end of his usual prayers."1

"There is too the case of that great monk, John the Small. He lived the hesychastic life in a pit, and his communion with God was not interrupted even when a demon in the form of a serpent wound itself round him, chewed his flesh and spat it out into his face."2

"He who practices pure prayer will hear the demons crashing and banging, shouting and cursing; yet he will not be overwhelmed or go out of his mind. But he will say to God: 'I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me' (Ps. 23:4), and other words of this kind."3

"You should be aware of this trick: at times the demons split into two groups; and when you call for help against one group, the other will come in the guise of angels and drive away the first, so that you are deceived into believing that they are truly angels."4

"Another saint living the hesychastic life in the desert was attacked, as he was praying, by demons who for two weeks tossed him like a ball in the air, catching him in his rush-mat. They were completely unsuccessful in distracting his mind from fiery prayer."5

What baffles me is the modern reading of such works, and how it re-interprets these kinds of writings and accounts.  I have a book by the Jesuit Fr. George A. Maloney entitled The Prayer of the Heart, wherein he constantly speaks of "demythologizing" these writings.  I am not sure why they cannot stand as they are.

My view is that if Evagrius, St. Anthony, or any other monastic wished to speak of the demons as metaphors and nothing more, then they were certainly intelligent enough men to do so.  They are not the only ones to do so - right up to our own time, such men as the exorcist Fr. Gabriele Amorth has written, almost in a frightening calm and everyday narrative voice, two books on his own experiences with the demonic.  So why should we be surprised when we read of it in the works of the past?  I'm not.

Conversely, what can we do with such writings when we are confronted with them?  Obviously, my prayer life is sometimes difficult, and I go through periods of spiritual dryness, as it is called - but I am not being tossed about like a paper cup in a tornado by the forces of evil, nor am I being assaulted by vipers, wolves, and scorpions everytime I say a Hail Mary.

Perhaps this is why such writings are no longer as common.  Perhaps they were, as modern Christian readers would prefer to say, a "thing of their time".  I have no idea - I simply read them as they are.  I for one do not think that all these ascetic saints simply wrote imaginative tales like this for the fun of it.  Their words were too simple to need ornate literary decoration like this - in fact, I do not think they would care to write in such a manner at all, were it not necessary.  Perhaps I'm wrong - I am no expert in the least, simply a sinful pilgrim reading what he finds and showing others.

  1. I think the demons are less conspicuous these days. They wrap themselves in what appears to be good, but what is actually bad. For example, pornography presents a good thing--the marital union--but completely destroys it's meaning and it exploits and scars the people involved in it's production, so it is bad. Just my two cents that hopefully didn't stray into questionable moral grounds

    1. Demons are literal beings. The earth was created in 4004 bc. when lucifer and his angels were kicked out of heaven thet must have went somewherw. Did they go to mars or the moon to dwell. No ovcourse not theres nothing there they came right to earth and tempted eve to destroy what God has created. Sin brought death into the world. Make no mistake hell is in the Center of the earth.

  2. To me the answer lies in the fact that a Christian is always tested at his strength. These warriors of God and later figures such as St Padre Pio, and St John Vianney endured actual confrontations with demons because they possessed the virtue to do so.

Many Christians are still fighting a war with giving up butter on their toast, or not speaking evil about their neighbor.

The Devil also is not going to harass people who he already owns, that might make them call upon God for help.

  3. It's easy to demythologize stories that happened hundreds of years ago, but what about the examples we have from closer to our own time? Many modern saints did battle with demons: the Cure of Ars, St. Louis de Montfort, Padre Pio, St. Gemma Galgani etc. And these were not just metaphorical battles, these were physical battles that left them bruised and bleeding.

  4. As we watch the evils of porn or hommosexual union or abortion, we should be aware that Satan has a firm grip on
mankind now. All should be locked in prayer daily against
    all this.

  6. I think Noah has it right. Perhaps these saints of the past had such great faith that they KNEW God existed. And these saints prayed fervently. Today faith is so lukewarm, that I think most people only timidly believe in God. If a Demon manifested today people would believe more. So the demons remain hidden.

  7. They say the greatest trick the devil pulled was making people believe he didn't exist - Going by the those who stand on the election podium, have Celebrity status, cast slurs on the Unborn, sell Porn, enslave young minds with false liberty with sex education, Condoms, The Pill, Abortion, Fashion, gross tattooing, destruction of Marriage Co-Cohabiting, Divorce, Those that Preach God while abusing innocents, War Mongers, Corrupt godless scientists, Evil Dictators, Denying Freedom of Conscious, Rape, Murder, Stealing, Destruction of Person's Character, Abuse of Employees and Employers, Euthanasia, Denying Medical Treatment, Removing of Healthy Organs, False Insurance, Drunken Driving Alcohol abuse, Drugs Denying the existence of GOD = I would say many have by their behaviour re-enforced the existence of Evil and has allowed Satan to reign supreme in their lives - Thank God We have Our Holy Mother

Praying in Front of the Blessed Sacrament sends shivers of fear through hell and satan is shamed that mere mortals made in God's image have been given great power through prayer by chasing him away - This is why he attacks those that love God Those that stands up for God's Laws and speak of God's Love for each prayer made by mere mortals help to forge the chains that will bind him forever = A Man is only a real Man when he bends his Knee before God - As Our Holy Mother said One Day Through the Scapular and the The Holy Rosary I will save the World - On your knees brothers We are at War and the enemy is at the door

  9. I have a guest person staying in my house with one of my grandchildren and while praying the Rosary one night I prayed a part offering it for the guest.
I did awaken to a most foul unclean spirit which had been dislodged from the guest the previous night and since the guest is under my roof I have more than enough legal right to command them to go in Jesus' Blessed name.

I am quite confident that not seeing what power the Rosary bears in such a manner is for our own peace of mind much of the time. The Father shows us what we need to know.

  10. It is true that these things Evagrius wrote about happen, even in our time. It is more dependent on "Pure prayer, as he wrote, and a pure heart as to how the enemy attacks. It is also based on how the enemy thinks he can best undo a persons virtue and dedication to God. The enemy always works on fears and weaknesses. In his appearances it is either for shock value or just mere frustration that he is unable to successfully draw a sincere Christian away from God. Once a Christian is aware of the nature of the attacks and knows how to handle them, the next tactic of the enemy is to repeat the same lie or temptation or harrassment over and over again hoping to wear the person out. These things are very real, and act as Evagrius describes. They are very sly and cunning, but we need not fear because Jesus is inside our hearts and therefore we have all of the answers at hand to combat the attacks. One must be disciplined though, and ready for a protracted war.

  11. These writings should stand as they are; one only has to look at the modern distractions as the demons of today - anxiety,TV,internet, porn, materialism, etc. and substitute them for his descriptions of demons. These powerful demons of today prevent all but the most faithful from a dutiful prayer life that includes concentration on the prayers being said.

    Thank you for sharing this.

  12. I'm not a Saint, but I have certainly battled with demons after becoming addicted to porn for 3 years in 2000-2003. Although free from that horrible addiction now I suffered a lot then, and continue to suffer demonic-assaults. Although I don't see the demons I do hear them and feel them. Generally they try to coat my throat or the back of my neck with completely vile, nasty substances. At those times I feel like I've fallen into a manure pit. A cold shower, offering up the suffering for those addicted to porn washes the nasty stuff off me. They also tell me I'll never get back with my girlfriend again (who left me because of my addiction). Once they put two spiders into my soul--I could feel them for days--it took a Saint's intercession to blow those things away. Truly the demons only want the complete destruction of all we hold dear--home, family, a good job, Civilization itself. It is frightening that on the World scene, they seem to be winning as our weak leaders continue to follow the paths of deception, lies and turmoil instead of Peace, Love and forgiveness.

    1. I find this response most interesting. I was freed of a terrible addiction about 12 years ago. God took mercy on me and it was simply lifted from me. I had prayed for years to be delivere3d from it.Ever since then, I have been unable to find gainful employment no matter what I have done...more schooling, etc. I feel a road block somewhere and can't figure it out. Maybe the demons are angry because the addiction was taken off my shoulders. It makes some sense. Thanks for posting that.

    2. Hi,
perhaps this block is a God send, not a demonic ploy?
Perhaps God wants to fast track you to trust in his Divine Providence and focus more on him than you have in the past.
He may be closing doors that wouldn't be good for you in the long run. God can be a strict dad, but its becaue he loves us and wants us with him. I am sorry you have this suffering. I will say a prayer God will strengthen and enlighten,

  13. Writing from personal experience for the depth of stupidity I can attest to what the saints describe. God in His great goodness and prudence protected me and others in a prayer group which participated in prayers of deliverance. Much later did I learn that nobody, but nobody, should presume to enter into this kind of activity. This ministry is reserved only for those priests whom the Bishop appoints to attend to these matters.

  14. St. Padre Pio also talked and wrote of such experiences as Evagrius Ponticus and the Desert Fathers did, so the demons are here and working against us. Perhaps, because the lay person does not have as deep and profound a faith as those of the past had, there is less reason for the demons to present themselves in such a manner. As one of the others commenting mentioned, there are so many other ways for the demons to attack us quite openly, though perhaps more subtly, through modern music. Rock and roll, rap, hip-hop, and pop music all present us with various images and ideas of the occult and evil in general, but many refuse to see it that way. Hollywood movies and TV shows do the same thing, and people just accept it because they no longer know any better.
As has been said, satan's greatest victory has been to convince modern humans he does not exist. How sad for all of us.

  15. People forgot that they were saints. In modern society, their stories are just only children tales. People believe in they were the imagination of some strange and crazy people who live lost in the desert. Would you think that Lanciano´s miracle is only imagination?

  16. I think that the more intense is our prayer, the closer we are to divine union, the stronger are the attacks of the demons. I venture to say that most of us in this modern age don't have the occasion to draw such strong and frightening attack from demons as we are so involved in wordly things, we are distracted enough from our prayers. Who among us can't remember a time when we were intensely united to our Heavenly Father in prayer and felt such consolation in our prayer, that we didn't also experience great trials from the evil one during those times? And the other side of that coin is that when we were the weakest in our spiritual lives, Satan didn't bother to give us a second thought.

  17. Just know what our Blessed Mother has revealed to us...that we live in a time when the evil spirits have extended power over those who would serve them. So many readily serve the demon...hence the atmosphere is poisoned by thier evil influence. We can see it in our brothers and sisters...we see it every day. Set aside your unbelief and lack of faith. Implore the help of our Blessed Mother, the angels and the communion of saints. GO TO CONFESSION...do not delay...run for your spiritual life. This is not a test...awake from your slumber...less you be lured to spiritual death. Begone satan in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

  18. Fr. George A. Maloney is a modernist. He apprehends the catholic Faith from a scientific point of view and therefore the demons are reduced to pure fantasies, illusions, psychic phenomenons to be scrutinized only through psychology and psychiatry since the Science cannot reproduce or demonstrate the demonic manifestations.
Unfortunately this opinion is widespread in the RCC currently poisoned by the modernist heresies.
It would be interesting to confront Fr Amorth with this guy.

  20. These are not only things of the past. I went through a period of a few years where I was attacked in varying ways by demons. Not fun, not fun at all. It only strengthened my faith, too, so they are not so smart sometimes. I think they were simply exasperated.

  21. The Holy Scriptures say that "where sin abounds grace much more abounds." Some of the ministers of our separated brethren have practiced a ministry and theology that indicates that when one third of the angels were kicked out of Heaven along with with Lucifer they fell to the Earth. They indicate that where ever an evil massacre or murder has occurred that that geographic place is a stronghold of Satan and evil things occur there like numerous traffic accidents or depressive business failures. These ministers bind Satan in these places by prayer and holy acts such as Holy Eucharist in the field. Perhaps the Desert Fathers lived in a place of intense Satanic activity. Some places on earth do seem to be more peaceful than others.

  22. The truth is that the early fabricators of Christianity interpolated those wild stories into the writings of early sages in order to shock and awe people to believe in this new religion of Constantine, the fourth century Roman Emperor. Anyone with experience in exorcisms myself included knows thar Fr. Gabrielle Amorth is an incessant and radical liar. He has never even delivered one truly possessed soul from demons.

  26. I can only add to all this by saying that for almost every day during these last 50 years I have carried a rosary in my pocket everywhere I go. A Jesuit who started me doing this said "You do not have to pray the rosary every day but just have it with you and you will find it brings you great comfort". I have carried it proudly and have given several to friends who were in need so that they too might be comforted. I am not the best Christian but I do attend mass every Sunday, health and weather permitting. I don't think I have missed mass more than 30 times in 70 years and I feel guilty whenever I do. It's not the same with my own children, they don't seem to think it's a big deal to miss mass as long as you are living as a decent human being and not harming others. I feel that the least I can do for my faith is to get out of my cozy bed and get to Church to spend 1 hour per week in the presence of others saying "Thank You"; I know you can do this from your own home or even in your car or anywhere however I feel that making that special effort is no big deal as long as you are not doing it to "show off to others". AMEN

  31. the evil one and his demons are alive and well... my own encounter with satan happened 6 yrs ago. (not the only time I've been attacked) At this time I prayed so deeply, and asked everyone I could think of to pray, for the soul of a dear friend who had just committed suicide. So very saddened and traumatized by this event, myself and many friends offered many prayers and masses for him.
On the heels of this I found myself attacked by satan, I will tell you the encounter was like this: "imagine what it would feel like to experience an attack to your soul, the utmost hate expressed to you, (opposite of God's complete Love) this is how I describe it. I grabbed my rosary told him to go to hell and took the attack as an "answer to my prayers, that my friend was saved"! AMEN
I in no way consider myself a saint (yet) :) but believe anyone can be attacked, holy or not, sometimes it's a physical expression, (I was temporarily immobilized until I shouted the Lords name, then satan released his holding me down) sometimes it's a deep soulful pain and others it's the temptation struggles, they all matter, God loves us all and wants no should lost. satan's greatest accomplishment is not being acknowledged, thus having a great hold on souls. Today he is succeeding so much because of unbelief and our society filled with false gods of ("take your pick")
satan wants to bring as many souls to hell to spend eternity with him, he already lost the battle but is still having his time to tear down souls. I don't fear him or death, I fear people who don't believe he exists.
Would like to add something else, which is that there are more folks than most people may know, who have had their encounters with the evil one, it's just not talked about openly, but when I have discussed my experience with like minded individuals, many shared their stories as well. God Bless, keep the faith, the sacraments are #1 and the rosary, holy water etc....

    1. I was (and still may be!) an arrogant, non believing, secular college professor. I found devout Catholics to be superstitious people from a bygone century. One night, however, my mind was changed. I discovered that I was incorrect about a great many things. A hideous demonic face actually manifested to me. It had human features, but was NOT a human face - the dimensions were wrong. I am now a humble, practicing Catholic. It's all real; I honestly had no idea, but thanks to Jesus and Mary, I do now. Life matters only in so far as we can assist others to save their souls; eternity matters! Viva Christo Rey!

  32. I do think it is important to read Evagrius as he was at that time because it certainly relates to the spiritual battle in our time. Satan is a chameleon using what is available to keep us from union with God in prayer. In the monks case the demons were physically attacking the flesh. In our time, he is attacking the mind, using all the accomplishments he has made through the demoralization of society through the desensitazation of the individual to Gods law. Satan will employ many tactics before, during and after prayer to keep us from devoting specific time to God in prayer. Spritual Combat as decribed by Dom Scupoli in his treatise and many mystics before him, will always acompany any attempt the Christian makes to become closer to Christ. Paul clearly refers to this battle in his letters and he uses terminolgy of war through the guidance of the Holy Spirit to emphasize his teaching.

  33. People have the mistaken idea that the evil ones are not present in the church. On the contrary they were even present at the passion - watching. Satan harasses those who he is threatened by, so if you are not being attacked then possibly you are not a threat to him. In that case perhaps you need to pray more and call on the help of the Blessed Mother.

    1. Good points, but I might qualify one thing you said. According to certain saints, plus I believe the account in "The Mystical City of God" (mary's account given to Sr. Mary of Agreda in the 1600's), Satan and his minions were forced by the Blessed Virgin to witness the Crucifixion. They very much did not want to be there even though they initially wanted to kill the savior. It is fascinating and I have not done it justice trying to explain it here. That book, by the way, is the 800 page "abridged" version. It is difficult reading, but it is so awesome to contemplate. The Virgin Mary visited this holy nun and insisted upon here writing these biographical accounts of the lives of the Holy Family. At the time these writings, 2600 pages!, were marveled at by all the universities, theologians, and received bishop's imprimatur's. Now some facts may be wrong or embellished, but overall, so believable. And "the words of the Queen" at the end of each chapter are inspiring.

Is it not true every saint, every apostle, every holy warriar is never 100% correct in their words and ways? That is human nature and even God's reminder to us that Jesus alone is without error.
